Do You Stick Or Switch?

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder It's a slow day for IT news so, instead, I'm offering a puzzler.

Here's goes...

You've been invited to participate on a TV game show. The host, let's call him Monty Hall, presents you with three doors. You're to pick one of the three doors, and then you can keep whatever is behind the door you've chosen. Behind one of the doors is a new sports car, and behind the other two doors are bags of kitty litter.

Now, assuming that you'd rather have a new car than the kitty litter, let's proceed.

Monty Hall, being the game show's host, already knows what's behind each of the doors, but he hasn't given you any clues. All the doors are the same size and shape.

Monty asks you to pick a door, and you do. He then opens one of the remaining two doors and shows you a stack of kitty litter bags. Monty then asks you if you want to change your mind and switch your choice to the other door.

Do you switch or do you stick with your first choice? Which option (switch or stick) gives you a better chance of winning the new car?

If you think you know the answer or if you want to try to justify why you think it doesn't really matter, drop a note in the ITrain' message center. I'll set up a special message board just for this question and open it up for public postings.

Have a great weekend!
